Over the course of seven full-length records, San Jose skate punks Jonny Manak and the Depressives have built a reputation for living fast, playing fast and skating fast. None of that’s really changed—except for the fact that frontman and bandleader Manak has put down the bottle and picked up his skateboard. You can catch him shredding bowls, riding walls and having a blast at the Lake Cunningham Skatepark in the latest video, “Anybody Wanna Skate,” the title track from his band’s latest album, released in April 2019. The Circus of Sin, the South Bay’s weirdest burlesque and variety show, has been putting butts in seats, and on stage, for more than three years now. Since its inception, it’s been held at the Caravan Lounge, but it appears that the event’s mastermind, King Patrick Eugenio, has graduated out of his big-boy pants. This week CoS presents “Science Friction Theater” at The Ritz. The sci-fi themed show will have aerialists, pole dancers and other acts too big and powerful for the low ceiling of a small dive bar—no offense to the ’Van, of course. Continue reading »

San Jose’s glorious Museum of Art stays open late one night a month for an evening of live music, night bites and encounters with art. This month’s First Friday celebration, sponsored by Facebook, features music by Guera/April Garcia and DJ Chale Brown. The museum cafe is open, as are all the current exhibitions at SJMA, including Speed City, an archival look back at the civil rights struggle through the prism of athletics; and the related exhibit With Drawn Arms, in which San Jose State sprinter Tommie Smith collaborated with artist Glenn Kaino to explore the dimensions of Smith’s famous raised-fist protest at the 1968 Olympic Games. First released in 1981 as an obscenely gory, hilariously bad, ultra low-budget horror flick, The Evil Dead has become a cult classic franchise—clawing its way across multiple films, comics, video games, a television series and several stage adaptations. This campy, comedic musical draws elements from the core movie trilogy: The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. Audiences can expect flying limbs, dad-joking demons and songs with titles like “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons.” Oh… and certain attendees will leave bloodied… well, cornstarched… if they’re sitting in the “splash zone.” Continue reading »

Along with orange sauce and Sleep, Duster is one of San Jose’s true cultural exports. Labelmates with Modest Mouse and Built to Spill, Duster’s Stratosphere is a belatedly beloved indie rock classic. Slow, spacey and minimal, they found their sound and then proceeded to knock it out of the park. While the trio of Clay Parton, Canaan Dove Amber and Jason Albertini haven’t issued a proper Duster full-length since 2000’s Contemporary Movement, all three have continued to write and record music. They returned earlier this month with a brand-new, critically acclaimed LP. Pick up the self-titled album on Muddguts. Continue reading »
It’s a holiday party at my house. My buddy, Pete, says you’re a good dude whose entire family is back East. No need to worry about being alone during the most joyous time of year because any friend of Pete’s is a friend of mine. Get to know us and our families, most of us went to high school together. We’re a weird but welcoming bunch. You say you moved to SF last year after graduating from Virginia Tech? Since you’re coming from the city, you’re welcome to crash in our guest room. Why risk the DUI or accident? Bring a little something to share and wear a stupid sweater then partake in the board games, the drinking, gorging and merriment. But when you wake up in the morning, throw your barf bag in the outside trash, make the bed and close the door all the way when you sneak out. I don’t mind you leaving early without saying “bye,’’ afraid of what potentially embarrassing thing you may have done in front of a group of essentially strangers while under the influence, but at least flush the toilet in the guest bath. Pete’s my boy from back in the day, and I love the guy. But because of you, Pete’s on my naughty list.
I Saw You is an anonymous “man on the street” column. Email your rants and raves about co-workers or any badly behaving citizens to [email protected], or send to 380 S. First St, San Jose, 95113. Submissions should stick to about 100 words.

Some people come to the Bay Area for a job. Others come for love. Falyn Walsh had a different reason.
“I was really into East Bay punk,” she says. “I came to start a band.” Continue reading »

After all the gifts are unwrapped and the hot toddies are kicking in, sometimes you just need to get out of the house and get down. While plenty of watering holes will be closed, the Continental will have a wide-open dance floor. The eighth installment of this annual James Brown tribute is a bona fide holiday tradition at the Conti. Just a few years ago, Mayer Hawthorne stopped in and played a set, so there’s no way of knowing who might make it out. One thing you can count on is hearing some classic cuts from the excellent seasonal staple, James Brown’s Funky Christmas. Admission is free with an RSVP before 10:30pm. Continue reading »

The Limos will always have a spot in the hometown hall of fame, and not only because they’ve put out a number of truly great songs. The guys also throw awesome parties. And given that this is the 10th annual installment of the alt-electronic duo’s XXXMas, it’s sure to be extra lit. This time around Eric and Gio have filled out their naughty list with Oakland-based band The Lovemakers and LA duo Fighter Jets. A special gift awaits fans who get their tickets early: a brand new Limousines song. Continue reading »

For those depraved souls whose holiday tradition includes adult beverages and Bad Santa, there is a live theater show just for you. Who’s Holiday is a decidedly raunchy, not-for-kids take on the Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This one-woman show stars Shannon Guggenheim as the all-grown-up Cindy Lou Who—now a boozy bottle blonde living in a trailer. Cindy Lou has some memories about the Grinch that, uh, didn’t quite make the original manuscript. The tale is told entirely in verse. But again, for God’s sake, leave the children at home! Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 22. Continue reading »
