Bobby McKeon, better known by his stage name, 4B, has attracted the attention of some of the biggest names in EDM with his aggressive Jersey club aesthetic. He first grabbed the national spotlight with his 2015 track, “Pop Dat.” The energetic collaboration with Aazar went on to become one of the most popular trap tracks of 2016. McKeon comes to Pure behind a new EP, Explosive. It is an appropriate title for the project, which finds the rising producer working with Purowuan, Acraze and YDG on four highly combustible club bangers. Continue reading »

It’s that time of year again. “Furries” from all corners of the anthropomorphic world come together in San Jose to explore the fuzzy boundaries between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom. FurCon, which has been going strong for 20 years now, attracts thousands of people who dig dressing up as animals, real or imaginary. For four days, the downtown will be overrun with psychedelic sports mascots taking role-playing fantasy to an extreme. FurCon is a place where furries and those who love them can come to lick their wounds. The Fur-curious, as always, are welcome. Continue reading »

In our neighborhood, where it’s not uncommon for three generations to shack up in one of the ‘70s-era duplexes that line the street, parking is at a premium. Every adult in each house has a car, which means about four vehicles per unit. Inevitably, those cars fill up the curbsides. But hey, we’re all playing this game of musical parking spots together. That’s why it’s aggravating to no end when you break the unspoken rules the rest of us generally live by. No reserving a space by leaving your one car in the middle of an opening that could easily fit two. And for chrissakes, stop blocking my goddamn driveway! Do you not see the impossible maneuvers you force me to make as I try to back out of my driveway in the morning? It’s like an obstacle course out here. Next time, I might make a little less effort to avoid dinging your car. #SorryNotSorry

It was New Year’s Eve when our text-versations finally took a turn for the flirtatious. I was thrilled, and we made plans for a date when you finally returned from your family trip to the East Coast. We talked about going out for dinner and “finishing what we started” the last time we hung out. So imagine my disappointment when you reversed course the next morning with a really strange excuse. “So … everything I texted after 8:45 last night wasn’t me. Someone took my phone.” Like, I get it if you got tipsy and said some things you regret, or whatever. But you could’ve just said that. Why make up a weird excuse about a phone thief and disappearing texts?

Your knowledge of random fun facts probably increases with the libations you indulge in, right? Looks like Sporcle, the trivia-quiz website, has an answer to this with Sporcle Live, their in-person pub trivia experience that’s made its way to San Jose’s Clandestine Brewing. Hosted by an MC, participants form groups and pit their trivia knowledge against each other while placing non-monetary bets on their answers. This added twist tests how much faith you really have in your own knowledge of minutiae. The winners of the two one-hour sessions walk away with prizes—and bragging rights. Continue reading »

Progressive, sludge, metal, alternative—labels like these don’t quite stick to Tool. Perhaps that’s because there hasn’t really been another band like these pessimistic LA weirdos… like… ever. They’ve earned Grammys, criss-crossed the globe on international tours and even cracked Billboard’s decidedly pop-centric Hot 100 chart. Tool’s approach to songwriting, rhythm and multimedia performance has remained innovative and stylistically transcendent. Their most recent album, Fear Inoculum, the band’s first release in 13 years, finds Tool continuing to experiment with unusual time signatures, left-field instrumentation, and multi-movement compositions. This local Latinx hardcore band pairs driving, bass-heavy intensity with militant lyricism, which takes aim squarely at socioeconomic inequality, racial injustice and structural violence. Songs like “STS” and “No Compromise” from their 2018 project, Disruptor, condemn creeping fascism and decry societal decay with potent verses that are as formally poetic as they are virile. Dolores holds fast to their commitment to uncompromising authenticity, radical political defiance, and the unifying power of music while sticking it to the man in true punk fashion. This Dutch duo of electro house DJs has been a potent force on the international house and dance music scene since their rise to fame in 2011—following the Tiësto-backed release of their club-banger “Mush Mush.” Comprised of Marlon Flohr and Ralph Van Hilst, the duo flows in perfect equilibrium: Flohr, the DJ and hype-man of the group, brings fiery energy to their live shows, while Van Hilst shines behind the scenes in the producer’s chair. The duo has collaborated with other hit producers and DJs like Afrojack, Martin Garrix and KSHMR. Continue reading »
