This year’s fall installment of the SoFA Street Fair marks a number of milestones. It’s the 10th edition since the festival returned in 2014 after a 10-year hiatus. Interestingly enough, the original SoFA Street Fair ran from 1994 to 2004. You can do the math there. The free live music runs until 9pm. With four outdoor stages and 11 indoor venues, there will be no shortage of great tunes to take in. Be sure to stop by the women-powered XX Stage to see a number of great female-fronted San Jose acts, including Soccora, Sweet Hayah, Steely Nash and Chloey Zelma.

San Jose’s seasonal Viva Parks series is back at it—activating Plaza de César Chávez with local bands, food trucks and family-friendly activities. Friday’s 5pm concert features Texas-born songstress Steely Nash and her band, the Cuts. Nash toes the line between country and pop with her soulful, sassy delivery and danceable beats. On Sunday, local alternative band Life Size Models takes to the park for a brunch-hour show starting at 11am. LSM mix earnest, heartfelt lyricism, driving guitar riffs and high-energy drumming, drawing inspiration from groups such as Arctic Monkeys and The Cure.

Few events are as ambitious as Sacred Art. Combining music, theater, art installations, and physical and performance art, the two-day event offers attendees an immersive, hypnagogic trip through the South Bay’s art scene. Explore galleries and tableaux as local soul singer Steely Nash plays Leonard Cohen. Or become a part of the spectacle with live body painting, baroque wardrobe regalia and participatory performances. The goal is to tear down the border between stage and audience, creating something like a spiritual experience without religion. And if that’s not enough, the event also doubles as a fundraiser for Ugandan children.

Just as sounds of bicycles roaming the streets of downtown San Jose begin to mellow, the SoFA District is poised to come alive with the sound of music. This year’s Viva Calle runs until 3pm, but the fall edition of the SoFA Street Fair keeps rocking with free live music until 9pm. With stages all over South First Street—inside Haberdasher and Uproar, among other venues—and a whole slew of performers, including Steely Nash, Israel Sanchez, The Odd Numbers, Sweet HayaH, Ato Walker and Drawing Heaven, it’s sure to be good time. In between sets, grab a cold brew and a bite.
