It’s difficult to find one activity for the whole family to enjoy, but San Jose nonprofit Mosaic has brought together the best of visual arts, performance and food to Bay Area natives to enjoy for free. On Saturday, the nonprofit is partnering with organizations from across Silicon Valley to showcase art (including works from Mexican artists Tulio Flores and Yxaya) and performances from Bloco do Sol, Buu Kim Tu and Calpulli Tonalehqueh. The event will also host workshops from organizations across the Valley and provide delicious eats from restaurants, including BBQ Kalibi and Los Jarochos.

The San Jose Multicultural Artists Guild/Tabia African-American Theatre Ensemble present award-winning Broadway actor Chester Gregory as he channels the iconic Jackie Wilson, a.k.a. “Mr. Excitement,” taking the audience back to Sept. 29, 1975. Featuring hits like “Lonely Teardrops,” “To Be Loved” and “Higher and Higher,” the show promises to be a page right out of rock & roll history. Gregory has earned accolades for his performances in such Broadway hits as Hairspray, Tarzan, Cry-Baby and Sister Act.

As part of a string of local celebrations of El Dia de los Muertos, the School of Arts & Culture at Mexican Heritage Plaza presents a walking tour of beautifully arranged altars and other art installations at various locations on the three blocks surrounding the MHP. After taking in the altars and art, visitors can stick around for a cumbia dance party with live music. The following day, La Ultima Parada kicks off at noon, featuring food, drinks and a wide array of merchants and artisans selling Dia de los Muertos-themed items and other works.Avenida de Altares

Mexican Independence Day is all about food at this first-ever Chile, Mole & Pozole event at the School of Arts and Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza. Mexican, American and Chicano families will all come together Sunday to share family recipes as well as the stories behind them in a day of eating and storytelling. Twelve families will come equipped with samples of unique salsas and other treats, including the staples—mole and pozole. Be sure to show up hungry.
