Summer is a time of celebration, and Juneteenth is the perfect kickoff. This Saturday, for the 40th year, the African American Community Service Agency brings Juneteenth festivities to the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds with a wide variety of celebratory entertainment, food, artwork and retailers to draw the community together. Saturday’s dynamic hosts include Grammy Award-winning vocalist Ledisi, NBC Bay Area anchor Marcus Washington, and Sunday Best starring gospel singer Le’Andria Johnson, all supporting a united African American community in Silicon Valley.

Calling all cold-blooded creatures! The lowbellied, the legless, the shelled and scaled all have a special place at the San Jose Reptile Show. Both fanatics and newcomers are invited to gather among their slithering, tongue-flicking friends. It’s a chance to get up close and personal with our reptilian and amphibian neighbors: bearded dragons, snakes, frogs, geckos, turtles, tortoises and more. Mingle with breeders, rescue groups, artisans, herpetological societies and vendors who supply exotic pet needs like bugs and rodents… yum! The show runs through Sunday.

The 75th annual Santa Clara County Fair comes to San Jose this weekend. Host to plenty of good, old-fashioned American amusement, visitors may enjoy bumpy carnival rides, animal shows and a hypnotist convincing the nextdoor neighbor to act like a fish. Then there’s the food. Enjoy classics like corn dogs, onion rings, funnel cake and fudge while catching live music from a variety of acts—including DeAndre Brackensick’s smooth R&B, the oldies of Brenton Wood and The Drifters, and tribute act Hey Jude. The fair runs Aug. 1-4.

In the Bay Area punk rock pantheon, few bands loom as large as Rancid. Fewer still have legit South Bay cred. Though Rancid was born in Berkeley—an offshoot of Operation Ivy and incubated at the legendary Gilman—they found a kindred spirit and second guitarist in Campbell native Lars Frederiksen, who joined the band shortly before the massive success of Let’s Go and …And Out Come the Wolves. Rancid is joined by fellow punk royalty at this Alt 105.3-hosted show. SoCal-bred Pennywise rose high on the same wave that carried Sublime, The Offspring, Green Day and Bad Religion to alternative radio playlists all across the country.

Crafting high-quality beer starts with a flower. Most beer enthusiasts, however, will only experience the bitter punch of hops in a mug. But at the Hop ’N Vine Festival hop-heads will have the opportunity to get hands-on with whole cones at the event’s “Hop ’N Vine University.” Featuring locally produced brew and wine, plus lite bites, entertainment and an exhibition on the history of beer and wine production in the Santa Clara Valley, it’s an ideal way for connoisseurs of both grape and grain to spend an afternoon.

Fans of French electronic composer Anthony Gonzalez (better known as M83) are familiar with his capacity for creating vibrant and electrifying compositions. This is the man, after all, who named his hit 2011 album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. It makes sense, then, that Gonzalez was tapped to pen the soundtrack for Volta, the latest touring show from Canada’s high-flying performance troupe, Cirque du Soleil. The big show under the big top comes to San Jose this week. Combining traditional acrobatics and elements of action sports with the company’s standard psychedelic palette, it promises to be an extravagant and exciting entertainment experience.

Pity every kid who grew up an obsessive fan of dinosaurs and is not part of the generation that gets to experience Jurassic Quest. This traveling exhibit and event features about 80 true-to-life models of dinosaurs that roar, move and lumber around. Along with slides, bungee jumps, science demos and all sorts of other goodies, this fantasy camp for dino lovers actually allows people to ride on the back of a T-Rex. For the 9-year-old boy buried in the heart of every adult, nothing short of gaming with Steph Curry could be more awesome. Opens Friday at 3pm.

Others, however, are more interested in compact imports—those European and Asian models known for their hairpin handling, breakneck acceleration and, of course, drifting. Hot Import Nights celebrates tricked-out Hondas, Yotas, Porches, Beamers and so much more. The touring auto show pulls the e-brake in San Jose this weekend. The event features car competitions, electric drifting trikes, food trucks and performances by live DJs. The show is fun for the whole family with fun zones for kids to let loose with Nerf gun battles and bounce houses.

As Silicon Valley Pride approaches, the Santa Clara County Fair is shouting out to the local LGBTQ community with it’s first-ever “Out at the Fair” event. This welcoming theme kicks off the 2018 fair, which continues through the weekend. Come out to enjoy delicious food, live entertainment, carnival rides, livestock shows, exhibits and all the traditional trappings. There will be performances by country singer Chely Wright, the Latin American-Iberian band LoCura and more.
