For the better part of two years, the San Jose Public Library has elevated local lowriding culture with a free community exhibit, panel discussions and other events. This Saturday, at California Crusin’: A Photographic Tour of West Coast Lowriding, photographer Jesus Flores comes to the King Library to show the slow and low images he captured between 1974 and 1983 while traveling all over the West Coast. At this event he will discuss the car builders, car clubs and car artists he met on his journey.

Producer and record label auteur Chris Manak, aka Peanut Butter Wolf, is returning to San Jose for his second homecoming appearance this year. The founder of the taste-making Stones Throw Records, an LA-based indie label that was once home to alternative hip-hop OGs like MF Doom, J Dilla and Madlib, headlined the Jazz Beyond stage at the 2019 San Jose Jazz Summer Fest. As Peanut Butter Wolf has grown his label, his curatorial tastes have only broadened. He’ll be discussing his musical journey during this free talk celebrating hip-hop history month.

It’s little wonder that Lowrider Magazine, the world’s authority on bouncy Buicks, chopped Chevy’s and dropped Dodges, came out of San Jose. From Cesar Chavez to freestyle music, the South Bay has long been a hub of Chicano culture. In conjunction with “Story and King: San Jose’s Lowrider Culture”—on display through March 31 at the King Library—“Out of the Past: San Jose’s Lowrider History” is one of several events celebrating the art of these tricked-out cruisers. This panel discussion will feature a number of lowriding pioneers along with those who are carrying the tradition into the 21st century.

Ten poets have been chosen and invited as semi-finalists to a competition that could land them on the Hammer Theatre stage this spring. Semi-finalists have already submitted video and text for their work, but now we’ll get to see how they perform live. Winners of this competition will go on to perform in the finals on March 22. There, they will be judged by award-winning poet and recently appointed Santa Clara County poet laureate Mighty Mike McGee. The top three in both competitions will receive cash prizes and be invited to perform at the Legacy of Poetry Day Festival at the Hammer in April. (SP)

The San Jose Peace and Justice Center presents a new exhibit focused on the art of social unrest. The event will feature a collection of almost 30 silk-screened posters, some of which date back to the 1960s—including works of art created for the civil rights and anti-war movements. Through these prints, a larger narrative emerges, painting a picture of more than 50 years of protest. The show also features new additions to the Peace and Justice Center’s collection, including a print focused on the surge of protests in the Trump era. (YK)
