Music nerds of all stripes can agree: vinyl is how music is meant to be heard. The gorgeous campus of the East Side’s Mexican Heritage Plaza is set to host a daylong celebration of the most durable format, with a plethora of vendors hawking records across genres, and DJs spinning great hip hop to show the digital natives what’s up. The guest of honor is producer Domino of Bay Area rap legends Hieroglyphics, who will be spinning vinyl himself as well as guesting on a live taping of San Jose’s excellent Dad Bod Rap Pod.

It’s difficult to find one activity for the whole family to enjoy, but San Jose nonprofit Mosaic has brought together the best of visual arts, performance and food to Bay Area natives to enjoy for free. On Saturday, the nonprofit is partnering with organizations from across Silicon Valley to showcase art (including works from Mexican artists Tulio Flores and Yxaya) and performances from Bloco do Sol, Buu Kim Tu and Calpulli Tonalehqueh. The event will also host workshops from organizations across the Valley and provide delicious eats from restaurants, including BBQ Kalibi and Los Jarochos.

Celebrate Día de los Muertos with Teatro Visión’s evening of song, dance and story. Based on B. Traven’s novel, Macario tells the story of a poor woodcutter who dreams of a day without hunger. It has been adapted for the stage by Evelina Fernández, with original music by Russell Rodríguez, choreography by Samuel Cortez and Rodrigo García directing. Presented in Spanish with English supertitles, the show will be staged by the School of Arts and Culture. It runs Thursday-Sunday through Oct. 20.Macario

Art, music, food and more are guaranteed at the celebration of the iconic Frida Kahlo. Attendees are encouraged to wear flowers in their hair and enjoy churros and paletas with the family, or sip on tequila and mezcal in the 21+ VIP section. There will be food vendors, a photo booth and mariachi all day as Arte Azul showcases the work of local Chicanx and Mexican artists. There will also be arts and crafts and face painting for the kids as well as a Frida-inspired fashion show put on by Paulina Clothing. Tickets are only available online and will not be sold at the door.

Viva Frida

Known for her bold self-portraits, her exploration of Mexican culture and, of course, her powerful brow, Frida Kahlo aimed to spark dialogue through her art. Her paintings often told stories of self-reflection, examined traditional gender roles and indicted societal standards of beauty. Honoring her legacy, this event invites the community to celebrate Frida’s work by taking in paintings by local Chicano artists and enjoying Mexican music and food. The event will feature a live Mariachi band, a Frida-themed photo booth and plenty of traditional Mexican antojitos like aguas frescas and churros.

Sandra Cisneros’ 1984 coming-of-age novella is adapted for the stage in Teatro Vision’s first youth production. Featuring a cast of local performers ages 12 to 18, the story of Esperanza Cordero’s life on Mango Street—including her newfound friendships, struggles with her family, and even sexual abuse—is told from the perspective of these young actors. Performed in English with Spanish supertitles, tickets to this Chicanx theater company’s production are offered at a sliding scale, so patrons can choose to pay anywhere from $10-40 to attend. Goapele was raised in a California community of South African exiles. Raised by politically active parents who instilled in the artist a revolutionary spirit from a young age, her name means “to move forward” in the Setswana language. These words that are reflected in her progressive lyricism and in the neo-soul and trip-hop sounds that define her music. Self-love and social consciousness are at the core of her latest EP, Dreamseeker, wherein the singer-songwriter returns to her roots with soulful tracks like “Power”—a sensual single about reclaiming an individuality “as bright as the sun.”
