Picture The Moth with a hefty helping of science. That’s The Story Collider in a nutshell. In addition to its weekly podcast, TSC has been bringing true and personal tales of science to live audiences since 2010. Recent episodes feature stories about heredity and the open ocean. This weekend, The Story Collider comes to San Jose State University with stories from professors of computer science and physics, a geologist, a program analyst—even a chemist turned philosopher. Executive Director Liz Neeley and Artistic Director Erin Barker host this geektacular night of scientific storytelling.

Who is Evan Tyrone Martin, and why is he playing Nat King Cole? It’s a valid question for theater buffs in the Bay Area, but for those active in Chicago’s musical scene, Martin is a well-known name. A leading actor in productions as varied as Jesus Christ Superstar, Dreamgirls, Oklahoma and The Color Purple, Martin’s latest role is his transformation into the jazz legend and famed pianist. This holiday-themed special is a joyful tribute to Cole’s classic hits and includes covers of songs like “Mona Lisa,” “The Christmas Song” and “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth.” Runs through Dec. 3.

An all-female cast of composers and songwriters perform 20 original songs inspired by and in honor of 20 remarkable women leaders, paying homage to the extraordinary achievements and courageous life choices made by women worldwide. A collaboration between the Women Like Us Foundation and Vital Voices, two female-run nonprofits focused on uplifting and supporting women in leadership positions globally, the project is led by Hamilton music director Kurt Crowley and features tributes to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former first lady Michelle Obama, and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, among others. This critically acclaimed play creatively imagines the Bard’s personal life as it follows him through a sleepless night in Stratford—as the skeletons of a famous marriage are dragged out the closet. Shakespeare fans are sure to be delighted with clever homages, and newcomers will appreciate the complex portrayal of the man who changed the English language. Runs through Feb. 11. (SP)
