Despite the 40 year(!) distance between then and now, ‘80s nostalgia remains stronger than ever. And aside from the endless IP revival in Hollywood and the return of animal prints in fashion, the thing people are most nostalgic for is the music. Those in the know remember that in the emerging club scene of the time, the best dance nights were latin freestyle, going from one synth-y funk beat to the next with Lisa Lisa, Angelina, Stevie B and the gang until the sun came up. Former KMEL legend Chuy Gomez brings the ultimate freestyle party to the Glasshouse.

Songstress Trish Toledo spins some gorgeous chicano soul, tapping into an oft-overlooked SoCal musical tradition dating back to the 1960s with acts like Cannibal & the Headhunters. Today, the Southern California “souldies” scene remains a fixture for those in the know in LA and Orange County. Toledo has put out a couple EPs of silky smooth, old school love songs, and a few 45s with souldies frequent collaborators like rapper Baby Bash on “Do You Love” and Thee Sinseers on “Thee Only One.” By the time the brass begins to swell, hearts will too.

Chat with mixologists from local watering holes, including Flights, Five Points and Haberdasher. Enjoy a drink or two, then grab some headphones and “shake your groove thing” at the silent disco. At the end of the evening, winners of the Masters of Change Awards, which honor those who help change the odds for young people in foster care, will be announced. (DI)
