One of the most distinctive bassists on the scene (any scene, really), Stephen Lee Bruner (aka Thundercat) played in thrash group Suicidal Tendencies, tours with modern jazz titan Kamasi Washington, and was a frequent collaborator with the late Mac Miller—but truly shines as a solo artist. He comes to outdoor festival Roaring Camp (where tickets sell by the pod) after a recent Grammy win for last year’s It Is What It Is, and is sure to get the forest feeling funky.

At times, their songs take more than seven minutes to fully develop: Sprawling pieces like “Castles High, Marble Bright” from the eponymous 2016 EP build tension with guitar harmonies that weave in and out of dissonance before unraveling into a cathartic release. On Circles, Caspian’s latest album since their five-year hiatus, diverges from their epic, guitar-laden foundations, introducing new instrumentation and cyclical song forms while retaining their focus on visceral impact. Caspian will headline at Felton Music Hall this Tuesday.
But she’s matured and flourished since her chart emergence back in 2004, mixing her obvious ear for the pop hook with lean arrangements and a serious plunge into artistic expression. She can scorch with rockers like “The River” and soar into the quiet places with the wonderful cover of Beck’s “Golden Age.” Her most recent album, WAX, is the second in a trilogy of records delving into “soul, body and mind” which includes the moving song “The Night That Bowie Died.”
After the 2018 release of their fifth album, Legacy, which topped international charts, the group has solidified its presence on the forefront of the contemporary reggae scene. Katchafire channels influences from ska and dub with deep bass grooves and easy-going vocals on songs like “I Can Feel it a Lot,” from Legacy. On other numbers, such as “Fyah in the Trenches,” reverb-laden horns and Rhodes harmonies add to the head-bobbing bass-and-drums mix.
