Getting around San Jose—with its car-centric infrastructure—isn’t easy for those relying on non-motorized modes of transportation. Viva Calle invites the Capital of Silicon Valley to consider what a bike-friendlier city might look like. This year’s springtime celebration of cycling, skateboarding, walking and just moving slower features live music, cultural performances and food outposts, all along a car-free route that privileges people-powered locomotion. Hubs include St. James Park, Plaza de Cesar Chavez, Parque de los Pobladores and Emma Prusch Farm & Park. Close your eyes and imagine a major American city without cars. Imagine the streets filled only with pedestrians, skaters, cyclists and kids who wear Heelys. On Sunday, you can open your eyes and see it for yourself when six miles of city streets in downtown San Jose will be closed to cars and trucks from First Street down Monterey Road, with activity hubs on both ends and the middle—at the County Fairgrounds. The idea is to get friends and neighbors out of their expensive rolling planet-destroyers and into the streets to explore them by other means and maybe even to boldly envision a carless future.

Forget the adage “American as apple pie.” You just can’t get any more American than burgers and beer on Memorial Day weekend. This popular Fremont festival brings together a variety of brews from Bay Area craft brewers—all of them out to impress. (Last year’s People’s Choice Best Brew went to a Belgian Dubbel with Coffee from Oakland’s United Beerworks.) There are also samples of sangria, for variety’s sake. The specialty burgers and sliders also promise to be epic, with a big burger-cooking competition and tons of live music to top things off. (WB)
