As a corrective to this pasty predicament, pianist Ihang Lin and vocalist Von Bringhurst perform live on YouTube a selection of compositions entirely written by female, POC, or LGBTQ composers. The final concert in Community School of Music and Arts’ Community Concert Series, ‘Exploring Equity’ centers the works of composers like Lili Boulanger, Fanny Mendelssohn, Ana Carolina Sousa, and more. By the way, if Bringhurst’s name sounds familiar, maybe that’s because he sang on the Kingdom Hearts soundtrack.

The Community School of Music and Arts hosts “An Evening with John Daversa.” The Grammy-winning composer and jazz trumpeter has worked with Fiona Apple, Burt Bacharach, Joe Cocker and Herbie Hancock, among other well-known musical artists. He regularly performs with his groups—the Progressive Big Band and the Small Band—and as a conductor and soloist. He will be performing cuts and sharing stories from his album American Dreamers: Voice of Hope, Music of Freedom, which prominently features artists who are also beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The show is free and open to the public.

Born and raised in San Jose, jazz pianist Dahveed Behroozi channels an expressive sense of mystery through his performance. With a driving rhythmic edge and a provocative use of compelling harmonic colors, Behroozi is one of the most creative voices in the Bay Area jazz community. Alongside other acclaimed pianists like Brad Mehldau and Sullivan Fortner, he was mentored by jazz piano wizard Fred Hersch during his college days in New York City. Behroozi leads his trio in a tribute concert to the great Bill Evans, one of the most important innovators in the history of jazz piano.

In anticipation of 2020—and Beethoven’s 250th birthday—the Community School of Music and Arts hosts the latest installment in its a concert series honoring the beautiful sonatas of our good friend, Ludwig van. Composed over the course of three decades, the 32 sonatas are widely recognized as some of the most important compositions in music. Axel Schmitt, CSMA faculty member and winner of the Los Angeles Liszt Competition, will perform at Tateuchi Hall. The evening’s performance will feature four sonatas, including “The Tempest” and “Waldstein.”

German-born pianist Axel Schmitt, a faculty member at Mountain View’s Community School of Music and Arts, has at least one heavy lift on his bucket list: He’s attempting to perform every one of Beethoven’s piano sonatas—that’s 32 total—before the 250th anniversary of the great composer’s birth in 2020. On Sunday, Schmitt presents his third concert of Beethoven sonatas, this one checking five more off the list. If you’re keeping score, that’s Opus Nos. 49-1, 49-2, 14-1, 14-2 and 22. It’s free, but seating is limited. Arrive early.

Led by Bay Area wind ensemble Quinteto Latino, the first-ever Seminario Institute will be held at the Community School of Music and Arts this weekend. Beginning with three days of workshops for pre-professional classical musicians of color from around the country, the event concludes with a concert at the CSMA’s Tateuchi Hall. The aim of the project is to expose the public to a diversity of players and sounds while also giving the next generation of classical players of color a boost in a sector that is commonly seen as predominantly Euro-American.
