Mexico City rock band Elefante is coming to Club Rodeo in San Jose Sunday night while the kids are asleep with a babysitter watching the house. Winding acoustic guitar riffs and powerful vocals in Spanish from this band are like a party where cousins and neighbors share barbacoa, tequila, mezcal and cervezas and wander around busy streets having fun. When this band hits the stage it’s a carnival, a fiesta, with booming drums and heart-pumping music. With them are Mexican ska band Inspector, right on time for the revival of ska music in America. Two rising women of country music come to San Jose to kick off 2020. The KRTY-hosted night begins with dance lessons from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. That’s followed by a set from Stephanie Quayle. “If I Was a Cowboy,” the most recent single from the Bozeman, Montana native, bucks back at the tired tropes of cowboy culture while giving women permission to embrace most empowering facets of rugged individualism. The evening’s headliner is Gabby Barrett, who caught her first big break after finishing third on the 16th season of American Idol. She is currently touring behind two singles: “I Hope” and “The Good Ones.”

The Cadillac Three is a trio of childhood friends with a knack for pairing sentimental lyrics and twangy licks with an undeniable country cool. Singer-guitarist Jaren Johnston, drummer Neil Mason and lap-steel player Kelby Ray released their last full-length, Legacy, back in 2017, but it seems they may be preparing a new collection of tunes; the crew dropped a new music video for their latest single, “Crackin’ Cold Ones with the Boys,” in April. They come to the South Bay behind the song, which features a stomping Gary Glitter beat and fuzzy ZZ Top guitars.

Up-and-coming singer-songwriter Drew Baldridge and Canadian country duo High Valley come to San Jose for this KRTY-hosted show. Hailing from Illinois, Baldrige cultivated his skills as a performer and songwriter in Nashville before releasing his debut album, Dirt on Us on indie country label, Cold River Records. Brothers Brad and Curtis Rempel of bluegrass-tinged country duo High Valley made waves with their 2015 Atlantic Records single, “Make You Mine.” Nominated for the Academy of Country Music’s New Duo of the Year award, the Rempels commercial breakthrough came with their major-label debut, Dear Life, in 2016.

Adriel Favela y Javier Rosas are two of Mexico’s rising stars within the narcocorrido genre. Just like American gangster rap—and heavy metal before that—the music, which centers around stories of cartel life, has drawn plenty of hand-wringing from the authorities. It’s also spawned real-life violence. Back in 2015, Rosas was the victim of a drive-by shooting in Culiacán, home to the Sinaloa drug cartel. Despite taking a number of bullets, he survived and is now on tour with Favela. Together, they teamed on a 2018 hit, “La Escuela No Me Gustó,” which combines elements of banda, furious and infectious Spanish guitar picking and gangland lyrics.Favela y Rosas

Pop-country duo Thompson Square comes to San Jose on their This Is Us: Acoustic Tour. Husband and wife Keifer and Shawna Thompson hit the road last year after the release of their cover of U2’s “With or Without You.” The couple has made the hallmark love ballad their own by matching the simplicity of acoustic guitars with a heartfelt duet arrangement. Their version brings nuance to the high-energy, good-time appeal they’re known for, while still featuring the kind of chemistry that can only come from two people in love.

When it comes to pop country hooks, you’d be hard pressed to find a stronger earworm than the chorus of Canaan Smith’s “Love You Like That,” where he promises love “slow as the Mississippi, strong as a fifth of whiskey, steady as a Tom Petty track.” Currently on his Long Way From the Freeway Tour, the Indiana-born singer and songwriter brings his towering 2014 hit and much more to San Jose this week courtesy of local radio station KRTY. It’s a chance to catch a rising star in an intimate local venue. Nashville trio Levon and Missouri-born solo artist Filmore open the show.

The Cadillac Three are a Southern rock coalescence of three childhood friends with a knack for sentimentality while also keeping their country cool. Singer-guitarist Jaren Johnston, drummer Neil Mason and lap-steel player Kelby Ray released their first full-length album for Big Machine Records in 2016 and the long-haired trio have more in store come August, when they release their newest project, titled Legacy. It’s an appropriate name considering the band’s rise from Nashville garage band to headlining shows in the U.K. They’re currently in the midst of a U.S. tour.
