It’s important to start off the new year with the right tone, and that means starting off emo. Since the release of their 2018 debut, awakebutstillinbed (aka absib) has been San Jose’s #1 representative in the emo ecosystem, bringing the world their frantic and compelling combination of pained vocals and harrowing guitar licks. This Saturday, they’re joined by Bay hyperska artist Eichlers and Seattle’s Worst Party Ever—originally a solo acoustic songwriting project for vocalist Andy Schueneman, now a Gainesville-based band who recently released a strong album in Dartland. This bill is sure to bang heads at the X Bar.

Somewhere around 2010, young musicians all over the country rediscovered the power of pairing emotionally vulnerable lyrics with jangly, guitar-driven hooks. Joyce Manor soon emerged as a top talent in this so-called emo revival. Their 2016 effort, Cody, saw the band push their frenetic sound in new directions—with an acoustic track, a handful of longer songs and some of their most concise writing yet. Though much of the album deals in anxiety and existential pain, it also has some bright spots. When “Constant Headache” starts blaring and the monster guitar crescendo hits, The Ritz will feel like one big group hug. (YK)
