The Michoacan-born, Monterey-based artist’s newest piece Creando Espacio (“Creating Space”) reimagines his grandfather’s spiritual dwelling place as inhabitable art. Opening this Wednesday at Montalvo Arts Center, the public is invited to participate in periodic acts of ritual and rite at the piece, starting with its opening ceremony this Wednesday. Inspired by the healing of individuals, the piece aims for the healing of a community. Bay Area artists Amalia Mesa-Baines and Viviana Paredes also contribute.

Or is it something more personal: a depiction of someone’s skin and body? LA-based artist Amir H. Fallah thinks it is exactly none of these things. In his portraits, Fallah depicts obscured bodies of hooded faces, defined by their environments rather than their skin tone or facial features. In a free online event hosted by the Institute of Contemporary Art, Fallah discusses his work in the context of personal experience, veganism, allegory, film, and hip hop.

In decades past, five big arts groups dominated the Silicon Valley culture scene, slurping up the majority of public support and private donations, while dozens of much smaller organizations fought over the table scraps. With annual budgets that in better times passed the $5 million mark, Ballet San Jose, San Jose Rep, San Jose Museum of Art, Opera San Jose and the Symphony were big companies that were dominated for years on end by big artistic forces—Dennis Nahat, Timothy Near, Jim Reber, Leonid Grin or the late Irene Dalis and George Cleve.

The local arts scene looks quite different these days. San Jose Symphony declared bankruptcy after its 2001 shutdown, ending a 64-year run. Silicon Valley Ballet called it quits earlier this year, while the Rep gave its final curtain call in 2014.

The 13-year-old Symphony Silicon Valley, a nimble successor to the original company, recently took a hit when Target ended its sponsorship of the annual Summer Pops series, and Opera San Jose dipped into its cash reserves from 2009 until this past season, when the organization’s new director put together a program that actually put the opera—barely—back into the black.

Still, even as these major groups have struggled, the performing and visual arts have proved resilient. The companies are younger and more diverse, both artistically and in terms of their leadership, virtualizing their operations and striving to do more with less. They are breaking out of the rigid confines of European tradition.

“There are a lot of things that aren’t right with the arts,” says Andrew Bales, executive director of Symphony Silicon Valley. But, he continues, that doesn’t mean the South Bay has given up on culture. In fact, according to Bales, “There really has been quite a resurgence of young folks in the arts—and it’s not even that they’re so young—it’s just a new generation of people.”

While there are fewer concentrations of power in Silicon Valley’s art scene today, there are many more important players—all of them working hard to bring relevant music, art and stage productions to the Bay Area’s most populous metropolis. Read about these new arts and culture leaders here and plan your fall calendar by checking out our Fall Arts 2016 listings.

From September 12 until December 8, the ZERO1 Biennial merges art and technology in Silicon Valley and throughout the Bay Area. Here are our top 10 picks to zero in on for the event.

1. Taiko Takes on Tech
For its ZERO1 performance, San Jose Taiko turns its annual fall show into a collaborative project called “Taiko+Technology.” Working with ZERO1 curator Jaime Austin; Michael Fienen of the USGS, who specializes in the “sonification” of earthquake data; the artists’ collective AnticlockwiseArts, which fiddles with Kinects to produce visual effects; and the South Bay’s Tim Thompson, a noted artist-cum-hacker, who also explores the possibilities of the Kinect motion sensor technology, Taiko aims to dissolve the presumed differences between an art with ancient roots and the latest innovations in digital presentation.

According to artistic director Franco Imperial, audiences can expect to see San Jose Taiko “using technology as a platform for inspiration,” with an emphasis on “use of projection to visualize how taiko is being interpreted on a digital canvas.” During the intermission, “the audience will be able to participate in interactive texting … and vote to select the first song for the second half of the program.”

The troupe has often experimented with intriguing partners for genre-trashing (or at least redefining) shows, most notably their memorable meeting of minds and meets with the Bangerz hip-hop crew at the SubZERO Festival in 2010. People are still talking about that show, which bodes well for this latest joint effort.
Sep. 21 at 8pm, Sep. 22 at 2 and 8pm; School of Arts & Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza, San Jose. Tickets are $20–$30.

2. A Hidden Space Revealed
Generally, the pleasant courtyard attached to the California Theatre, with benches and trees, is cordoned off with a wall of metal lattice work. For ZERO1, the Bay Area design team of Nataly Gattegno and Jason Kelly Johnson, a.k.a. Future Cities Lab, is converting the off-limits space into a public environment: Datagrove. A strange, alien contraption fashioned from shiny rods bent in a wave form serves as a superstructure for some orblike data transmitters. When fully functional, the device, fashioned by “luminescent fibers,” will produce subtle sound textures geared to the ebb and flow of curiosity seekers.
Runs Sep. 12–Dec. 8; California Theatre, San Jose.

Barefoot Coffee is doing its part to support underground art in San Jose by showcasing several talented local artists’ work this Friday night. Not to mention, all the coffee you could possibly want and loud, fun music courtesy of DJ Doug and Rich.

The featured artist, Alda Nuvia, has a style that marries realistic and expressive portraits with an abstract, child-like innocence. She works with watercolor, highlighters, old coloring books and standard paintings and sketches. It’s never scary or horrifying. Even her most bizarre characters have a friendliness about them, much like the weird drawings child paint and laugh about, telling their parents that it is their friend.

Her more realistic portraits ride are just strange enough that it’s difficult to pinpoint what exactly is off about them, though something indeed isn’t right about them. They are like characters in a person’s dream that are inexplicably and unquestionably in motion. See more examples of her work HERE.

In addition, three other artists are showcasing their work: Jorge Cruz, Noah Geraci and Otessa Crandell.

The opening reception at Barefoot Coffee Roasters in Santa Clara begins are 7pm. Admission is free.
