Rock/funk/soul outfit Sweet HayaH have been a welcome fixture in the San Jose music scene for a while now, and have coaxed audiences all around the Bay Area to sway their hips to the global rhythms underpinning their unique sound. Vocalist Nehal is a powerful force, her energetic vibrato and sunny charisma providing a one of a kind atmosphere for their live performances. At Art Boutiki, they’re joined by local alt-rockers Periscope and Relapse for a holiday show that’s quickly becoming a sweet, sweet holiday tradition.

With her velvety vocals, excellent command of pitch, and airy and eclectic backing instrumentals, Jackie Gage has been waving the banner for vocal jazz in the South Bay for years now. Currently at work on an album with Grammy-winning songwriter Jesse Harris, now is the chance to see the talented singer at the peak of her own craft. Venture on down to Art Boutiki for Tikiyaki 5-0, a four-piece outfit delivering classic surf grooves with an old-school spy movie edge. Opening is Pollo Del Mar, whose decidedly Californian mood rides to shore on psych-tinged guitar lines. There couldn’t be a more fitting venue to find the perfect windows-down soundtrack for your next drive over the hill to Santa Cruz to catch the last waves of summer.

Jazz is on the upswing and vocalist Danielle Wertz is just the person to get us all back into the swing of things. Since relocating to California from D.C. in 2017, Wertz has garnered both local and national acclaim for her dulcet vocals and powerhouse songwriting. This weekend, she makes one of her first appearances since February 2020 with a dual in-person/online show from Art Boutiki, performing songs from her debut album “Intertwined,” like the autumnal “Beautiful Love,” as well as dusky, smoke-eyed piano ballads like “Something to Live For.”

Audience members at Art Boutiki this Saturday will find themselves transported to another realm by Starover Blue’s ethereal tapestry of sound. Founding members of the Portland-based band met at SJSU, where vocalist Kendall Sallay studied operatic performance—a background made clear through her gossamer soprano. With dreamlike synth melodies, mellow folk guitar and mathy post-rock rhythms, Starover Blue weave together myriad influences seamlessly. The mythical haze may even inspire some to leave the venue with one of Art Boutiki’s many fantasy comic titles, but a livestream of the set is also available for those who prefer to daydream at home.

Pianist Dahveed Behroozi brings an expansive set of influences to the keys. Trained in both jazz and classical, he picks up from the work of masters like Charles Mingus and Keith Jarrett in finding the genres’ overlapping lines. Mixed in, there are elements of fusion, latin-jazz and minimalism, resulting in a style he likes to call “wide-screen pianism.” This year’s Echos was dark and atmospheric, “an exceptional piano record,” according to All About Jazz, “tinted with a probing uncertainty and a hypnotic sound sculpture vibe.” Ticketed indoor event; free to view online.

Summer travel is picking up, but for those still in the city, a bit of New Orleans flavor comes to Art Boutiki, San Jose’s comic store/indie venue/gem for finding all things outside the box. Led by the vocal harmonies of sisters Abigail and Glori Cosio, Bon Bon Vivant lays out boisterous cabaret bops and soulful ballads, carrying the audience from Saturday night’s bourbon-soaked black lace to sweating out sin on Sunday morning. This livestream/live audience hybrid will have tickets for in-person revelers and worldwide broadcasting for the housebound, cautious, hungover and out-of-town, bringing a sultry Southern evening to their bedrooms.

In early 2020, Boulder Creek dwelling folk-rockers Wolf Jett were just about to record their first full length when the pandemic hit. No longer able to travel to the recording studio, they built their own in their house up in the Santa Cruz mountains. Then, in August, the CZU lightning complex burned the whole thing down. The story is memorialized in the band’s cathartic & Seger-like single, “Garden of Pain,” complete with a video shot on location in the remains of the drummer’s former bedroom—a song the band is sure to rip through during their free livestream from Art Boutiki this Saturday.

The work of soul musician JoDavi is well summed up by his own term “cinema-soul.” It is evocative and performative, full of filmic nostalgia and classic motown arrangements. It swells and swings and knows how to swagger when the beat gets mean. As part of the release tour for new album One More Go, JoDavi’s livestream from Art Boutiki will be a celebratory event just right for a summer evening. But with his background in gospel and R&B, and pedigree as an instructor, wedding musician and arranger, “Mr. Maestro” surely has more than just “one more go” in him.

Let’s face it: we live in a golden age of vibes. Whether it’s Nathan Apodaca vibin’ to Fleetwood Mac, the Williams twins catching vibes on their “First Time Hearing” music channel, or the popular #vibes hashtag on Tik Tok, we love our vibes. And what instrument is more vibey than the vibraphone? This Saturday, local vibraphonist and 2014 Jazz Search West winner Dillon Vado positively vibes out with a free livestream from Art Boutiki with his Table Trio. The all-star group includes a member of the Oakland Symphony (drummer Jason Lewis). East Bay vocalist Danielle Wertz joins them for the night. Vibe on.
