A riff on one of Chekhov’s most critically acclaimed plays, Stupid Fucking Bird keeps things unconventional. The fourth wall is shattered, love triangles are tested and every character discovers just how much of a drag growing up can be. The LA Weekly called it “the best Chekhov adaptation in two decades.” Director Kirsten Brandt, who has directed in theaters throughout the South Bay, will carry the show, which kicks off with a “pay what you can night” on Thursday and a preview on Friday night.

The Naglee Park Neighborhood Association invites dog owners to bring their four-legged friends to William Street Park to for the annual Bark in the Park event. Whether you’re the leader of an entire pack or are simply a dog lover, all are welcome to participate. There will be a dog lookalike contest and demonstration of how border collies herd sheep. New to this year’s festival is a kids zone, puppy makeovers and a dog-theme bounce house. All of this, plus low-cost vaccines and $5 microchipping, plenty of food and drink, and more than 75 vendors selling pet products.

In Peter and the Starcatcher, we learn how Peter became an ageless wonder, how Black Stache became Captain Hook and about the age-old war between the forces of good and evil. Take a seat and prepare for high jinks on the high seas in this Tony Award-winning musical by Rick Elice. This Tabard Theatre Company production runs through Oct. 8.

When certain—ahem—“ailments” cannot be resolved, a doctor resolves to administer a novel treatment… involving an electromechanical vibrator. Written by the playwright Sarah Ruhl, In the Next Room or The Vbrator Play was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony Award-nominated production for best new play. At once a humorous send up of 19th-century patriarchal society, the production also examines the advent and spread of electricity. Costume designer Kathleen O’Brien, known for her spot-on recreations of Victorian garb, will help bring this period piece to life.

Hysteria grips a 17th century Massachusetts village. As the Salem witch trials begin, a group of young women face preposterous and perilous charges of communing with Satan, and the bonds between families and friends are tested. This 1953 Tony Award-winning drama by Arthur Miller originally found parallels in the political scare-tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy. However, as anyone who has paid attention to the news of late will know, the play is ripe for modern interpretation. Award-winning Bay Area director Jeffrey Lo returns to Los Altos Stage Company to helm this American theater classic.

In 2010, the classically trained pianist Olya Fomina left Russia to fulfill her rock & roll dreams in New York. Her career kickstarted as a hired keyboard player for D Generation on their 2014 tour. Later she met Brian Viglione, former drummer for Dresden Dolls. The two, fell in love, married and formed Scarlet Sails. Joined by guitarist Mark Kohut and Jesse Krakow, the group has released two full-lengths and one EP. Their newest record, Future From the Past, is psychedelic with heavy keyboard.

Lounge on a complimentary inflatable pillow while enjoying a summer night of music. San Jose’s department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services extends its summer events with an open mic at St. James Park. Hosted by emcee “Mighty” Mike McGee, guests can enjoy live music, access to food trucks and game tournaments for no charge. This kid-friendly event will also provide chances to support local artists who will display their works, with some pieces available for purchase. Signups for entertainers start at 5:30pm and the show begins at 6pm. Stay tuned or join the upcoming open mics in August and September.

Ren Geisick has been singing since she was a child, but it wasn’t until adulthood that she fell in love with jazz. Geisick earned a degree in jazz vocal performance from Cal State-Long Beach, where she fine-tuned her talent and sound. The past couple years she has performed with Dolce Musica throughout the South Bay. Geisick was presented the DownBeat Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Jazz Vocalist. Geisick shares her new single, “Love Song #1,” this Friday, as she prepares her debut solo album, Ren, Love Song, produced by Grammy winner Jesse Harris.
